Hannukah Eco Lights 2009-5770 | First Night

We are very honored to begin our 3rd Annual Hannukah Eco Lights with a Jewish environmental teaching from one of the key figures in the Jewish world today, Richard Pearlstone.

And demonstrating that the Hannukah lights burn brightly the world over, a thoughtful teaching from China by Manuela Zoninsein.

Shabbat Shalom and Hag Urim Sameach!

Richard Pearlstone, U.S.A.

There is a debate recorded in the Talmud between the great sages Hillel and Shammai on the proper way to light the menorah on Hanukkah. Shammai taught that we should start with eight lights the first night and light one less each night until we light one on the last night.  Hillel, who we follow to this day, taught that we should start with one light on the first night and add one light each night until we light eight on the last night.

Perhaps there is an insight here on our becoming more environmentally conscious. As much as it is natural for us to want it all right from the start we will need to learn how to be grateful with less than everything we want (and how appropriate that the Hanukah miracle is with oil)  or as a human community we will all wind up having less and less. But if like Hillel we can from the start learn to feel grateful, enjoy the light, and experience the fullness of having less than everything we desire we will all ultimately wind up having more.

If Chanukah means anything to young Jews today, it is the opportunity to connect with things that matter in the long run, amidst the winter work/study crunch. It is a chance to connect with family and friends, with traditions and history—and with food and drink.

Unfortunately, on other nights of the year, this is happening less and less. In Israel, in the U.S., in Brazil and China and everywhere in the world, people are spending less as a proportion of their budgets on food today than they did fifty years ago. As Sviva Israel’s “The Environment in Jewish Thought and Law” describes, “Israelis are spending more [proportionally] on non-essential items” as compared to food items.

It is important that we each take the time to understand the source of our sustenance, to appreciate our comestibles. That entails understanding our food’s environmental impact, by whom it is produced, where it is raised—and, what are the best technologies and practices available to make that all happen. The Torah commands us to not waste resources; and even as a Jewish moral imperative, each person should feel responsible for his/her part in the world.

So, next time you light that candle, or drink a glass of wine, or bite into that crispy latke topped with apple sauce or sour cream or whatever or other condiment you like: take a moment to really think about how all that abundance came to find its way onto your fork. Because taking that extra moment to appreciate: that is what Chanukah is all about.
