 Tonight's Eco Lights share the theme of the appreciation of beauty and how to preserve it. The first, a poetic and inspiring teaching in Hebrew, is by Ronit Dolev. The second teaching is in English by our very own Carmi Wisemon written whilst in the US training teachers for the Eco Connection.

חנוכה מתקשר אצלי עם חורף. נרות בחלון, טיפות של גשם. רקפות. נרקיסים. צבעונים. תפוזים ופומלות. גם כאשר קר. הטבע גומל לנו בצבעים, ריחות וטעמים מופלאים המעשירים את חיינו.
לפני שנים רבות היה בארץ אחד הקמפיינים היותר מוצלחים אשר קרא לציבור לא לקטוף פרחי בר בזכותו אנחנו נהנים בעונה הזו של חג החנוכה ממרבדים של רקפות וכלניות הממלאים את הארץ.
אצלנו בבית כמו בבתים רבים אחרים כבר מפרידים אשפה, מייצרים דשן טבעי ומרחיבים את המודעות לשימוש במוצרים ירוקים וטובים לסביבה.
זה הזמן להוכיח שהקמפיין ההוא לא היה תופעה חד פעמית ודווקא בחנוכה, כאשר אנחנו נהנים מפירות הקמפיין המוצלח ההוא לשוב ולהתגייס לשמירה וטיפוח הטבע הסובב אותנו."

On Hannuka we celebrate the miracles which accompanied the Jewish revolt against the ancient Greeks. The Greeks idolized beauty and “all that is attractive to the eye” Breishit(Genesis) 3:6
Greek worship of beauty was achieved primarily by it's consumption - much like those people who love fish by eating them. Unlike the Greeks, the Jews appreciated and enjoyed beauty by meditating upon it and appreciating it's ultimate creator. The Jews only partially won the battle against the Greeks and today being Greek is still popular with the cultured masses.
We no longer battle the Greek nation but we are challenged constantly by a culture that has forgotten how to appreciate natural beauty. Our spiritual and environmental quest during this Hannuka is to learn how to meditate upon the beauty in this world with out always having to consume it.
